2009 Preview: Lake Park

By Curt Herron

Lake Park has posted 14-6-5 seasons during the past two seasons despite returning very few starters in each campaign.

As Norm Hillner begins his 26th season as the Lancers' coach, he's hoping for a similar showing from this year's squad.

The Lancers have one returning starter and will rely on several new faces as they prepare for their difficult schedule.

Hillner has plenty of depth on his 25-man roster and he believes that he'll likely play many of them on a regular basis.

"In the last couple of years we've only had 11 to 13 guys who played a lot," Hillner said.

"But this year I have 16 to 18 kids with five or six of them who will play most of the time."

With a squad featuring 13 seniors, 10 juniors and two sophomores, a lot of newcomers could see regular playing time.

"A lot of the younger guys are talented but they're still learning to play at the speed and pace of the varsity level," Hillner said.

"Things could change every game for us. But it's a nice luxury to have some depth so we can sub a little bit to keep people fresh."

The key man for the Lancers will be senior captain Mike Keane, who returns in the midfield.

"Last year Mike was more of a defensive player," Hillner said. "But this year he'll be more of an attacking midfielder.

"He's a terrific kid and a quality player. There will be a lot riding on his shoulders due to his overall demeanor."

Senior David Admire and junior Alec Kubica both played in the midfield last season but Admire moves to forward this year.

Marty Lupou, another senior, also saw time in goal last year and posted a 4-1-2 record which included three shutouts.

Others who could see time in the front line are junior Elson Divinagracia and sophomore Nick Zanghi plus Kubica and Keane.

Joining Keane in the center midfield will be senior Lou Cesario while Kubica will be on the outside along with sophomore Tim Adelman.

On defense, senior Nick Ricciardi and junior Jimmy Albright will be joined by seniors Michael Gallo, Stephen Durante and Matt Graf.

Other senior members of the Lancers include Andy Mele, Piotr Gorecki, David Tobon, Matt Voris and Ariel Noel.

Hillner welcomes a new assistant coach to his staff who enjoyed a great deal of success during a long coaching career.

John Erfort was head coach for 29 years at Buffalo Grove, where he won a state title in 1988 and took second in 2004.
