Fremd in a lackluster tie with Elk Grove

A warm-up match before for the IHSA soccer playoffs.
That's all it was for Fremd's boys soccer team on Tuesday afternoon. The Vikings played to a scoreless tie with Elk Grove in an Mid Suburban crossover in Palatine.
However, the match wasn't what Fremd coach Steve Keller wanted to see going into the opening-round playoff contest at Mundelein coming up on Saturday.
"I'm very disappointed with the effort and the mentality," said Keller, whose team sits at 6-9-3. "You'd think the kids wanted to use this game getting ready for the postseason. We didn't and it was like why are we here? It was like there was no point to it."
The Vikings' effort lagged after they got past Barrington 3-2 in overtime on Saturday.
"We looked at times like we've never played before," Keller said. "Decision making and the intensity was poor. It was all over the field and nobody had a good game.".
The Vikings were fortunate getting a tie, while its defense consisting of Alex Bochat, Garrett Peters and Lorenzo Savino survived Elk Grove's pressure at times.
"We broke down a couple times and (Elk Grove) had some easy opportunities," Bochat said. "We didn't hustle back when we got countered. We can get some credit for the tie but we've got to stay together a lot more."
Meanwhile, Elk Grove (7-7-3) will take the tie going into its opening postseason match against Schaumburg, which will be played at Leyden.
"Both teams are trying to get playoff-ready and we were kind of flat," Elk Grove coach Joe Bush said. "It wasn't dominating with a couple of guys getting some shots. I thought we were organized in the back and it was a shutout.
"We handled the midfield pretty well, but we didn't have the finishing aspect at all." |
