Boswell off to the University of Denver

By Gary Larsen

Minutes after Chris Boswell’s high school career ended this year, Naperville North coach Jim Konrad was asked if he’d ever coached a harder-working player.

“No,” Konrad said. “Like I said before, it’s a great example to our younger guys when our best player is working harder than anyone else on the field.”

Boswell and his work rate will be well-tested next year, in the thin mountain air at the University of Denver. The senior was also considering the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

“I had official visits to both places and I really liked Denver,” Boswell said. “The environment is great there. The school isn’t in the city but it’s still a city school. It’s a great city.”

Boswell and his family lived in Denver before moving to Naperville, prior to his freshman year. It was at the end of his freshman season that Boswell got his first taste of varsity soccer, when Konrad pulled him up from the lower levels and sent him out on the field.

In a postseason game.

“I was so nervous,” Boswell said. “But (Konrad) pushed me, and he gave me a bunch of confidence. He believed in me when I was a freshman and he’s always been there for me.”

Boswell’s ability to cover ground marked his entire varsity career, as a hard-nosed, blue-collar midfielder. This year he was often needed in the attacking third, and he finished with 12 goals and 4 assists for the Huskies in 2009.

The Pioneers will utilize Boswell’s relentless nature somewhere on the outside next season. “I’m better defensively and when I met the coaches they had a plan for me,” Boswell said. “When Denver offered, I took it. I made the decision last Sunday.”

Konrad knows as well as anyone what the Pioneers are getting next year.
“Boz is a special kid. How can you not love a kid that works that hard?” Konrad said. “He just puts his head down and gets after it.”
