Players, coaches recognized at IHSSCA honors banquet

A large number of players that we reported on throughout the season were honored at Thursday's Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association banquet at the Diplomat West in Elmhurst.
Sixty athletes from the 25 schools that www.westsuburbansoccer.com covered received either All-State, all-sectional or all-sectional honorable mention recognition.
A total of 15 of those players received the highest honor, All-state, with Neuqua Valley's Bryan Ciesiulka earning the ultimate award, being selected as Player of the Year.
Other All-Staters are Neuqua's Keegan Balle, Wheaton Warrenville South's Drew Bellmer, Naperville North's Chris Boswell, St. Charles North's Angelo Catalano, Naperville Central's Art Garza and Lyons Township's Billy McGuinness and Chris Meingast.
The other All-Staters from the 25 programs are West Aurora's Henrry Perez, Naperville Central's Chris Prince, Prospect's Mike Stankiewicz, Neuqua's Jack Turanchik, Geneva's Brady Wahl, Saint Viator's Trevor Wheeler and Naperville North's Mike Wiest.
Twenty-nine players from those same schools were honored as all-sectional performers while an additional 16 earned recognition as all-sectional honorable mention picks.
All-sectional players from Section 2 are Downers Grove North's Paul Hogan, Lyons' Kyle Kurfirst, Hinsdale Central's Robbie LaRocque, Downers North's Marcin Modzelewski, Hinsdale Central's Michael Oleszkiewicz and Downers Grove South's Cal Roselieb.
Earning the same honor from Section 3 are Marmion's Steve Anderson, Wheaton Academy's Tim Daniels, Neuqua's Scott Davis, Marmions's Sam Duffield, Wheaton Academy's Stephen Fernandes, Lake Park's Mike Keane and Wheaton North's Pat Langan.
Other all-sectional picks from that section are Waubonsie Valley's Oliver Mayer, Wheaton Warrenville South's Alden Marton, Bartlett's Joe McCullough, Wheaton South's Ricky Munguia, West Aurora's Jesse Ortiz and Waubonsie's Nikhil Patel.
All-sectional selections from Section 6 are Saint Viator's Alan Aboona and Kevin Cavers, Fremd's Spencer Filosa and Prospect's Kyle Mataloni and Sam Slusher.
Selections from Section 10 are Batavia's Mitch Albrecht, St. Charles North's Dan Figura, Geneva's Seamus Kaminski and Batavia's Anthony Torres while Naperville North's Evan Trychta earned all-sectional honors in Section 14.
Honorable mention all-sectional picks from Section 2 are Downers North's Neil Corcoran and Downers South's Matt LaLonde while Prospect's Jim Brault and Barrington's Marc Drouin earned that same honor in Section 6.
Section 3 honorable mention all-sectional picks are Bartlett's Fabio Aiello, Wheaton South's Derek Babb, Wheaton North's Josh Bennett, South Elgin's Bart Mazurek, St. Francis' Jaimie Pigott, Marmion's Max Rosenfelder and Wheaton Academy's Brandon VanderVeen.
Earning the same honor in Section 10 are Geneva's Kevin Hilgart, Batavia's Ty McCoy and St. Charles North's James Reed while Section 14 selections are Naperville North's Lee Grander and Naperville Central's Colin Rook.
Six athletes from the 25 schools that we covered were also honored by being selected to the Chicago Fire's All-State Academic Team.
Those individuals are Marmion's Sam Duffield, Wheaton South's Alden Marton, West Aurora's Jomar Mendoza, Downers South's Ramzi Riadi, Wheaton South's Colin Ringel and Downers North's Benjamin Stein.
Brian Papa, who has coached at Lincoln-Way East, Lincoln-Way, Sandburg and Bloom, was inducted into the IHSSCA's Hall of Fame for his 28-year coaching career and for his longtime service as an association board member.
The Miro Rys Sportsmanship Cup went to Wheaton Academy, which was one of three finalists in that category, along with Oak Park-River Forest and Lincoln-Way West.
Assistant Coach of the Year honors went to Barrington's Tim Rietz, who was selected from a final group of three that included Downers Grove South's Darren Orel and Boylan's Mark Couper.
Palatine's Willie Filian was voted as Coach of the Year, finishing ahead of the other two finalists, Neuqua's Tony Kees and O'Fallon's Jason Turkington. Downers South's Jon Stapleton was Section 2 coach of the year.
And the Soccer Person of the Year award went to my partner in this venture, Gary Larsen, for all of his efforts in laying the groundwork and then writing, editing and taking photos for this website.
The other two finalists for this award were Hinsdale Central's Richard Flesher and Harvard's Keith McCloud. Gary is a past winner of the IHSSCA's Media Person of the Year award in girls soccer.
