Cadets hope to make history with a win over Freeport
By Curt Herron
A Marmion Academy athletic team has never won a state trophy in a playoff sport but its soccer team can make history by assuring the school of that feat.
With a win in today's 5:00 p.m. Class 2A Barrington Super-Sectional, Marmion advances to this weekend's state finals at North Central College in Naperville.
If that happens, the Cadets would be assured of a trophy, which wasn't presented to the 1989 football team that lost in the Class 3A semifinals to Princeton.
Marmion has won four state trophies in a scored meet, swimming, which it did so from 1998 to 2001 with the highlight being a 2000 state championship.
Coach Kevin O'Connor's Cadets have never reached the state finals and to do so they'll have to beat another program that's trying to make some history.
Like Marmion, Freeport also captured its first sectional championship in the sport and will be attempting to earn its spot in the state semifinals.
The 21-5-1 Cadets own a 15-match winning streak after avenging an earlier defeat to Wheaton Academy with a 2-1 win in Saturday's Hampshire Sectional finals.
That avenged a 5-4 defeat suffered by Marmion in the teams' earlier meeting that played a major role in determining the champion of the Suburban Christian Conference.
Marmion also had its hands full during its previous match in which it had to rally to claim a 4-3 sectional semifinal victory over Lakes.
The Cadets are led by senior all-sectional selections Steve Anderson and Sam Duffield and by senior honorable mention all-sectional pick Max Rosenfelder.
Other starters on Saturday were seniors Tommy Cruger and Jeff Martin, sophomores Brad White, Mike Frasca, Mike Maley and Alex Ruble and freshmen Connor Lefelstein and Matt Switzer.
Coach Nick Namio's Pretzels (20-2-4) edged DeKalb 1-0 in a shootout to claim the championship of the Freeport Sectional.
Freeport, which captured the NIC-10 championship this season, is paced by All-Stater Jared Brendemuehl.
The Pretzels have also gone a long time since winning a trophy in a boys playoff sport, last pulling off the feat with the 1951 basketball state title.
Tuesday's winner plays the champion of the Peoria Notre Dame Super-Sectional between Lemont and the host Irish in an 11:00 a.m. semifinal match on Friday.
