Barrington now 3-1 since Indianapolis
By Mike Garofola
Things have been looking up for Barrington after its struggles at this year’s Great Midwest Tournament in Indianapolis two weeks ago.
With its convincing 2-0 victory at Niles North late Saturday night, the Broncos’ record moved to 4-9-1 overall -- but even better, 3-1-0 since it traveled to Indy.
The Broncos continue to be a stingy side, recording its 3rd shutout in 4 matches, the latest going to junior Steve Polasik, who snared his first-ever start with the big club.
Barrington recently switched from playing 3-in-the-back to a flat-4, in the hopes that change would be good.
"We went to (4) in the back when we played Chaminade Prep (a national power from Missouri) and although we lost 3-0 – to a great side, I must say -- we could see that it was something that could work for us when we got back home," Broncos head coach Scott Steib said following the Niles North match.
"Defending with just 3 in the back is very difficult, and we had a lot of trouble when we (were) in that formation," admitted both Dan Barber and Mason Gott, who along with Marc Drouin and Eric Buchel.
The foursome now form the defensive quartet for the Broncos' and all equally shared man-of-the-match honors after seizing control of the home-side Vikings' attack while adding plenty of spark to the Barrington offense.
Barber, a converted midfielder, and Gott, who recently returned from missing a handful of matches due to a concussion, helped inspire the Broncos set piece opportunities, particularly after intermission, which saw a markedly different second 40 minutes of play.
The Niles North (2-9-2) defense, which bent but did not break in the first half, was creaking under relentless pressure put forth by the Broncos. Max Mohr, Tony Shin and Taylor Williams all contributed in back for Steib, in addition to the aforementioned backline, which showed confidence coming forward to join the attack.
"We brought (Buchel) up recently from the JV, put the other 3 guys (in) the back, and tried a little different look up top when we pair Will Farrell (a defender) along with Ryan Foley," began Steib.
"All of (those) moves have kind of given us a boost, and the energy is much higher than it was before."
The Vikings, coached by former St. Viator star Dan Edminster, were most dangerous whenever the ball was on the foot of Brian Monterroso, or when Freddy Sund would deliver a ball out of the back.
However, Danny Rodriguez almost made something out of nothing when his left-footed blast from 30 yards skimmed the bar in the 24th minute.
Eight minutes later the Broncos would find the back of the net when Barber connected with an unmarked Drouin near the spot, and the senior thumped a header past keeper Daniel Miranda off the Barber corner.
"We were screaming to our guys to mark no. 11 (Drouin) and no one did, and look who scored?" said a disgusted Edminster.
Consecutive corners in the waning moments of the first-half nearly led to the Vikings' drawing even when Elan Ness-Cohn crashed a shot off the woodwork.
The early exchanges after the break were a clear indicator of how the next 40 minutes of play would unfold, and when the hour mark approached the Broncos added to their lead to cap a terrific 10 minutes of fierce attacking, which precluded a superb save from Polasik who raced off his line to save a Monterroso point-blank shot.
Barber and Krissinger would combine on a 2-vee-1 along the right flank, which would lead to a free kick opportunity after Barber was hauled down just outside the box.
Gott would then hammer home from the back post a well-weighted serve from his teammate Barber.
"I just got myself to the back post and put in the ball," Gott said matter-of-factly. The goal was the first of Gott’s varsity career, matching Drouin’s feat earlier in the contest.
The Broncos, who defeated division rival Hoffman Estates on Friday, have a busy week ahead, beginning with MSL table-leader Palatine on Tuesday, followed by East leading Prospect on Thursday, and ending with a homecoming match on Saturday against upstart Elk Grove.
"Barrington is a much better side than their record indicates," said Edminster.
"The work hard, knock the ball around, and (tonight) did a very good job of defending."
