Lake Park shoots, scores vs. Waubonsie Valley
By Eddie Burns
Norm Hillner’s message was simple to his Lake Park squad at halftime of its match at Waubonsie Valley on Tuesday night.
Shoot the ball.
The Lancers had managed three shots during the first 40 minutes and that wasn’t going to cut it if they wanted to escape Aurora with a much-needed Upstate Eight Conference victory.
Lake Park stepped up its play on offense and that extra energy helped the Lancers score a 2-1 win against the Warriors.
“We decided that we needed to get Waubonsie goalie (Sean Elvert) more involved in the match,” Hillner said. “We had to test him and get him moving and once we did shoot more, it created a lot more opportunities for our offense.”
David Admire started the scoring when he placed a free kick from 35 yards out right to the head of teammate Nick Ricciardi, who headed it past Elvert in the 51st minute to give Lake Park a 1-0 lead.
“We’ve worked together a lot this season on perfecting that play,” said Admire, who now has 10 assists. “I am always looking for Nick on restarts because if he can get a head on the ball there is a good chance it will find the back of the net.”
Admire added a goal of his own in the 61st minute to give the Lancers a two-goal cushion.
Admire benefitted from Waubonsie’s inability to clear the ball out of its own end. Teammate Mike Keane worked the ball to Elson Divinagracia, who pushed it up to Admire. After a few dribbles Admire fired a shot into the Waubonsie net for the goal.
The Warriors (6-4-1, 3-2 Upstate Eight Conference) cut the deficit in half when they converted a penalty kick.
Admire, who usually spends most of his time on the offensive side of the field, spent the final few minutes assisting on defense.
Goalie Marty Lupou made a handful of saves and gave credit to his defense for limiting Waubonsie’s chances.
“The guys in the back were great tonight,” Lupou said. “After we gave up the penalty kick, Waubonsie came at us, but we were able to meet the challenge.”
Injuries have hampered the Lancers (6-5-2, 2-1) back throughout the season, but they welcomed back Keane and defender Jimmy Albright against Waubonsie. Lake Park is still missing a few key players, but they are scheduled to return soon.
“It’s been hard to get everyone together,” Admire said. “Every game you look over next to you and there is a different player at a position and it is tough to play like that, but we’ve been able to overcome it and we’re starting to get everyone back and healthy. Once we get everyone back the chemistry will come.”

David Admire found himself in and around the action throughout Lake Park’s win against Waubonsie Valley.
Admire had a goal and assist during the Lancers’ 2-1 win.
“He always is around the ball and creating scoring opportunities,” Lake Park coach Norm Hillner said.
Admire, who plays primarily on offense, was called upon to help shore up the defense when the Lancers were short a few players thanks to yellow cards late in the match.
“I do whatever I am asked,” Admire said. “We needed help in the back and I went back there and helped shore things up.”
Admire has two goals and 10 assists for the Lancers.
