Warriors play well but fall to Lancers

By Eddie Burns

Waubonsie Valley coach Angelo DiBernardo liked the effort he received from his team against Lake Park.

The only problem was how late it came in the match.

Waubonsie played extremely hard for the final eight minutes of its match against Lake Park on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the Warriors were two goals behind when they began their fight and they couldn’t quite come all the way back in losing a 2-1 decision to the Lancers.

“I wished we had played the same urgency of the last 7 or 8 minutes,” DiBernardo said. “That is what we tried to tell the (players) and that is what we are not happy with. (The players) have to understand, regardless of their age and how young they are, that you come out to compete from the get-go.”

Waubonsie (6-4-1, 3-2 Upstate Eight Conference) did take the action to Lake Park (6-5-2, 2-1) from the start, but the Warriors couldn’t convert on their chances.

“In that first half, we played well,” Waubonsie’s Oliver Mayer said. “We were making good runs, but when it came down to that final moment we just didn’t have it. At the end of the day, missing those chances cost us.”

The chances the Warriors did have were not tough to stop for Lake Park goalie Marty Lupou or the rest of the Lancers’ defense.

“Offensively, our shots were not really that dangerous,” DiBernardo said. “We did not create very clear opportunities where their goalie had to make a save. From the possession standpoint, it was a decent game for us – we made progress since our last match. But offensively we didn’t create enough to win the game.”

The game was scoreless at intermission.

Lake Park’s Nick Ricciardi scored on a header in the 51st minute and teammate David Admire made it 2-0 in the 61st minute.

“Defensively, we didn’t do enough to lose the game either,” DiBernardo said. “They had two opportunities and they took advantage of it and put them in and that was the difference.”

Mayer cut the Warriors’ deficit in half when he converted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute.

“After we got the one goal you could really see the urgency in our players,” DiBernardo said. “Why not do that from the start when the game is 0-0? I never understand why that happens in athletics. It is a state of mind.”

The Warriors had the better of the play throughout most of the match and that was evident by their eight corner kick attempts, but when the scoring chances were there, they were unable to finish.

“I really felt we were the better team and it is really frustrating that we didn’t get the result and I thought we deserved it,” Mayer said. “We just need to be ready for the moment and when the ball pops to you. If you aren’t ready, you are putting yourself at a disadvantage.”

DiBernardo wasn’t completely discouraged.

“This was probably the best game we’ve played from the standpoint of trying to play the game of soccer – from box to box,” he said. “We tried to play the game. Our possession was better, our first touch was better and our ideas of the game were better.”

Waubonsie did play without the services of defenders Nik Patel and Jack Dickens, who were both out because of injuries.

The Warriors went with Mayer, Brent Ito, Amar Pandya and Andrew Russell on defense and they played well outside of the two scoring chances created by the Lancers.
