Fremd and Barrington take it to overtime
By Rusty Silber
Both Barrington and Fremd have played matches at the end of the season with a lot of meaning for a trip to the MSL Cup. However, this time around each team had thoughts more for the IHSA State tournament which begins next Saturday
Still, both matched up quite well on Saturday night. Fremd's Michael Heika scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the host Vikings earned the 3-2 victory in Palatine.
"We've developed a healthy rivalry," Fremd coach Steve Keller said. "Barrington's had good teams and we've had some good teams. We've battled in the playoffs a couple of times and both programs have had success over the years."
Fremd (6-9-2) scored a couple of quick goals in the first half. But Barrington (4-14-2) responded in getting a couple of goals back and forced the overtime.
"Give credit to Barrington, they outhustled us throughout the game," Keller said. "Both teams had chances to score and we were the fortunate one to win."
Heika's game-winning goal came with 92 seconds left in the first overtime by scoring with the help of a cross from Spencer Filosa. "I just read the cross, ran in, timed it and finished it," said Heika, who now has six goals. "It was frustrating not getting a goal on a cold night.
The Vikings' Filosa scored the first goal from an impossible angle off an assist from Jake Nedza five mnutes in. Then, Heika scored on a header off Lorenzo Savino's cross in the 16th minute which put Fremd ahead 2-0.
But Barrington struck back 30 seconds later when Taylor Williams scored off a pass from Marc Drouin.
The Broncos tied the game in the 47th-minute when Drouin knocked in a header off a perfectly placed Will Farrell free kick.
"We've been playing better the last few games," Barrington coach Scott Steib said. "I believe for more of the game, we were the better team. Unfortunately, we made the last mistake.
"This is probably the best rivalry for us in the conference. Over the last 10 years, Fremd is the team we take a lot of pride in playing."
Fremd got another solid effort from Spencer Filosa, who has roamed every corner of the pitch this season.
Filosa not only set up the winning goal on Saturday, he also scored the opening goal from an angle that didn't look possible coming off the end line.
"It was a pretty hard angle and I guess it was a good shot," said Filosa, who has five goals this season. "I got a little lucky and the keeper (Will Cotopolis) didn't come out and block me. I actually just saw a little spot and just had a little more room to take the shot.”
“I've been told to take more shots and make more opportunities."
Teammate Michael Heika knows what type of player Filosa can be in getting the job done for the team.
(Filosa) is a very skilled player," Heika said. "Probably the most fit on the team running-wise. He knows how to break though and keep going.”
Keller is happy to have Filosa to use wherever needed.
"In this game, he was our heart and soul," Keller said. "(Filosa) hustles all over the field. One player that can play anywhere and has done a lot for us.' |
