Cadets beat Yorkville for ninth straight win

By Curt Herron

Marmion had a lot of good reasons why it could have come out and turned in a poor performance on Saturday.

But instead of making excuses for the circumstances, the Cadets put together a nice showing against Yorkville.

On a windy day not conducive to playing good soccer, Marmion started with almost no bench since several players were taking part in a junior-varsity game.

And leading goal scorer Sam Duffield missed all of the first half because we was scheduled to take the SAT test.

Despite all of that, the Cadets jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead and went on to capture a 6-1 win at Fichtel field.

The win improves the Cadets to 15-5-1 and they have won nine straight matches since dropping a 5-4 decision to Wheaton Academy on September 21.

Marmion established early control over the Foxes by scoring a pair of goals within the first six minutes of play.

The Cadets needed just 2:28 to get on the scoreboard for the first time when Mike Frasca connected following a corner kick by Max Rosenfelder.

Then just 3:05 later, Rosenfelder found the net off an assist from Tommy Cruger to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.

Steve Anderson, who was moved to forward from defense to fill in for Duffield, added a third goal about 10 minutes later.

With 24:34 remaining in the opening half, Cruger handed out another assist as Anderson was able to find the net.

Holding a 3-0 halftime lead, the Cadets had to head into the strong wind in the second half but they were boosted by Duffield's arrival.

The senior forward immediately started to make things happen, which resulted in four shots on goal during the first 10 minutes.

Rosenfelder was stopped on a short shot three minutes in and then Duffield was halted on a similar effort about three minutes after that.

About nine minutes into the new half, Duffield slammed a shot into the crossbar and Frasca was just wide of the net a short time later.

Things finally clicked again for the Cadets with 26:36 to go when Duffield scored on a header in front of the net off of a pass from Frasca.

Cruger sent a bouncer to Yorkville's keeper just after that but then Marmion was back in the scoring column with 24:03 left to play.

That's when Frasca was able to convert from right in front of the net following an assist from Duffield.

The Cadets kept the pressure up as Connor Lefelstein had a pair of shots that were halted right around the midpoint of the half.

A short time later, Duffield was stopped on a short attempt and then Lefelstein had a corner kick deflected away.

Marmion collected its final score with 15:58 left when Mike Maley scored from close range following a corner from Lefelstein.

Joe Romanos and Luke Magee also had shots on goal for the Cadets before the Foxes finally scored with 13:04 remaining.

Little happened the rest of the way, other than a short shot try by John Riordan a couple of minutes after Yorkville scored.

Thanks to the late score, Marmion's goalkeeper duo of Evan Lefelstein (first half) and Bradley White (second half) missed out on the shutout.

Now the Cadets wrap up the regular season with a game at IMSA on Tuesday and a rescheduled match with Marian Central Catholic on Thursday.

Then they hope to continue their winning ways in the postseason as they take the number-two seed into the Class 2A Hampshire Sectional.

With usual scoring leader Sam Duffield gone for the first half of Saturday's home match with Yorkville, some people needed to step up for the Cadets.

Not surprisingly, Cadets coach Kevin O'Connor was able to rely on two of senior captains, Steve Anderson and Max Rosenfelder, to get the job done.

Anderson moved up to play at forward in the first half and scored a goal before returning to his usual defensive spot after the break.

O'Connor liked how Rosenfelder worked without the ball as well as he played with it, when he scored a goal and assisted on another.

Those contributions helped Marmion jump out to a 3-0 halftime lead enroute to a 6-1 nonconference victory over the Foxes in Aurora.
