Huskies roll to another shutout victory

The wins continue to pile up for the Naperville North boys soccer team.

North dispatched Downers Grove South by a 5-0 count on Saturday afternoon for its eighth-straight shutout victory.

Senior goalie Mike Wiest has been in net for each win during the streak.

Wiest is tied for 14th all-time on the IHSA list for most consecutive shutouts in a season and also set a school record as well for consecutive shutouts in a season.

The Huskies (11-0-4) have outscored the opposition 17-0 since they last allowed a goal against Waubonsie Valley on Sept. 12.

"I'm not sure we've deserved all of those shutouts, but we've been fortunate," North coach Jim Konrad said.

"Mike's made some great saves throughout the stretch. He has saved us a number of times this season and he really gets the credit--he's earned it because he has earned each of these shutouts."

Senior Chris Boswell joined sophomore Evan Trychta as a forward and the duo combined to score all five goals.

The Huskies tallied two in the opening half and then blitzed the Mustangs (4-8-5) for three more in the second half.

Boswell netted his first career hat trick while Trychta increased his team lead in goals scored to 15.

In three of the past four matches, Boswell has moved from the midfield to join Trychta on the attack at the forward position with Dean Gastouniotis moving to the midfield.

"I love playing with Trychta," said Boswell, who has scored five of his nine goals as a forward. "It is really fun. We work well off each other."

Konrad said having those two on the top can cause the opposition headaches.

"Boswell and Trychta both go to the ball so hard and they just run and run and are tough on the ball," Konrad said. "Evan is so shifty that they created a lot of chances for us today."

Konrad said that Boswell will continue to shuffle between the midfield and forward for the remainder of the season.

The Huskies coach also was critical of the defensive effort he received from his back line.

"Yes, the results are there and our record looks like we're a heck of a team," Konrad said. "I'm just hoping we can clean up our play in the back.

"We are going to get stung one of these days, if we don't start playing better. We just can't keep relying on the soccer Gods to keep smiling on us because we've received a lot of breaks."

Boswell agreed with Konrad that the defensive must play better.

"In the back four we have to get tackles," Boswell said. "North is known for always winning tackles. We go hard for everything and it's been a little light back there and we have to learn to keep better possession."

The Huskies' next biggest challenge comes at home Tuesday against Wheaton Warrenville South. The Tigers (14-1-2) join the Huskies as the only two unbeaten teams in DuPage Valley Conference play.

"It will be a great test," Konrad said. "I'm looking forward to Tuesday night. Obviously the conference title hangs in the balance.

"(WW South) plays a great style of soccer and I'm anxious to see how our backs hold up against that type of pressure because (WW South) will bring it."

Man of Match: Chris Boswell

In recent weeks, Naperville North coach Jim Konrad has tweaked his lineup to see how players react in different positions and Chris Boswell has performed at a high level playing at forward.

Boswell has scored five of his nine goals in the three games he's played at forward.

"It's something that coach has done and it's worked out for us," Boswell said.

Konrad said the switch to offense is not permanent for Boswell.

The competition the Huskies will face in the coming weeks won't allow for Boswell to stay at the forward position, but he's enjoyed the chance to play with sophomore sensation Evan Trychta.

"I love playing with Trychta," Boswell said. "We work well off each other."

Konrad said he likes to change things up.

"We've tried some new things," Konrad said. "Chris was up top and, of course, he enjoyed it because he was going on goal.

"He'll be back in the midfield vs. WW South because I'm not sure if we can afford to not have him in the midfield. We'll see."

This new development should definitely give future Huskies' opponents something to think about before they step out onto the field.
