Feisty Schaumburg ends Geneva's season
By Gary Larsen
Geneva knew it was probably in for a battle, and Schaumburg more than obliged.
A physical Saxons team ended the Vikings’ season with a 2-0 sectional semifinal win on Tuesday, at the Class 3A Hoffman Estate sectional.
Geneva was never able to get into an offensive rhythm, while Erhan Caglayan and Declan Geraghty finished on scoring chances for Schaumburg, which posted its 9th consecutive win on Tuesday.
Caglayan broke the ice with a mere 33 seconds left to play in the first half, converging on a ball near the goalmouth with Geneva keeper Ryan Ward and poking it to the back netting.
Geneva sent a few dangerous shots on in the second half in the face of a persistently disruptive and scrappy defensive effort from Schaumburg, but couldn’t close on a goal. Geraghty’s goal in the 66th minute on a Mark Bielanski assist seemed to deflate Geneva.
Tuesday’s game was a rematch of a sectional semifinal played last season.

Geneva finished 18-5-2 on the year, after losing seven starters from last year’s team to graduation. Kevin Hilgart and Seamus Kaminski led this year’s squad offensively with 15 and 18 goals, respectively, while Brady Wahl’s return to the midfield -- after missing the beginning of the season due to injury – keyed the Vikings’ attack.
The Saxons keyed on Geneva's main offensive threats, effectively slowing them down throughout Tuesday's contest.
