Anthony, Davis key a big second half for St. Charles North

St. Charles North’s wing mids got rolling and Angelo Catalano buried Warren on Thursday.

Catalano tallied four times in the North Stars’ 4-1 win, and North scored three second-half goals thanks largely to the work on the outside put forth by junior Noah Anthony and freshman Tyler Davis.

“Those two had fantastic games today,” said North Stars coach Eric Willson. “They gave us goal-scoring opportunities throughout the entire game. Noah Anthony can play anywhere on the field.”

“He is far beyond his years right now and he really understands the game.”

North repeatedly worked the ball deep up the sidelines in the second half, slotting balls back or crossing them in where Catalano could bury them.

“It was the quietest four goals I’ve ever seen scored,” Willson said. “There were a whole lot of guys that played incredibly well today.”

“Our passing, our ability to keep the ball in the second half, and Angelo was given chances right in front of the net and he’s a great finisher.”

North went up 1-0 early in the contest but Warren tied the game just before halftime. The North Stars back line of

“We struggled (defensively) early in the season but sometimes it just takes a little time for guys to get used to playing together,” Willson said. “Our back four played really, really well tonight.”

Central defenders Dan Figura and Trent Coyle teamed with outside backs Zack Matuszak and Nick Lutsch in helping protect keeper Tyler McEnery and shutting Warren out in the second half.

“I think Tyler and Zach (Hosler) would be starting varsity keepers anywhere,” Willson said of his two senior goalies. “We feel like there’s not a huge separation between them so we just go every other game with them.”

North improved to 3-2 on the season, and 2-1 in Barrington tournament play. There were two ways the North Stars could have advanced to Saturday’s tournament title game: either a Barrington win or tie against New Trier on Thursday, or a New Trier win by no more than two goals.

Unfortunately for St. Charles North, New Trier won 4-0 over Barrington in Thursday’s nightcap, putting North in Saturday’s third-place game.

“Whether we play for first or third, we’re just happy we’re going in the right direction,” Willson said.
