Fire coach drops in on the future

By Tony Kees

On Sunday, January 24th new Chicago Fire head coach Carlos de los Cobos made an unscheduled stop at the Fireʼs youth club and Academy intra club 5-a-side league at 7 Bridges Sports facility in Woodridge.

Accompanying coach de los Cobos was Technical Director Frank Klopas, 1st Team assistant coach Mike Matkovich, Academy Director Larry Sunderland, President of Player Development John Dorn and Director of Player Development Paul “Caddy” Cadwell.

Once they arrived they took up seats on the sideline along with 1st team captain and club ADOC CJ Brown, Academy Staff coach Alex “Flex” Hernandez, Academy Volunteer Coach Eddie Vucinic and Assistant Academy Director Tony Kees.

Both the Fire Juniors and Fire Academy players are mixed together and assigned to teams and play a set schedule each Sunday in a no-boards, 5-a-side league that has showcased some highly entertaining small-sided-soccer! With no coaching allowed the players organize their own line ups and way of playing.

Coach de los Cobos was impressed with the enthusiasm of the players and liked the free-play concept. The coach has been busy getting acclimated to his new surroundings, familiarizing himself with the Fire organization and preparing for preseason, which now includes the U16 and U18 Academy teams traveling with the 1st team to Mississippi and Mexico!

When asked to comment on his stop at 7 Bridges coach de los Cobos said, “If Iʼm going to lead properly I need to know all of my players”.
